Savannah, Georgia meets Peoria, Illinois in Hollywood, CA, 1933 :
a pair  of Non-Jewish composers, golf fanatics and mutual admirers,
find lifelong friendship, and change each other's lives...along with ours !!

Johnny Mercer (1909-1976), born in Savannah, Georgia, and a leading lyricist from the 30s into the 60s, was teamed up with one of his favorite composers, Richard Whiting (1891-1938), hit maker of the 20s and 30s. Together, they composed the scores and hit songs for  Warner Brother's films, HOLLYWOOD HOTEL, “Hooray For Hollywood!,” and READY WILLING AND ABLE, “Too Marvelous for Words.” Richard Whiting was one of two composers (Harold Arlen being the other one) that Johnny could write in the same room with. Their collaboration blossomed into more than a friendship, Johnny become like family. After Whiting’s premature death, Mercer became a surrogate father and mentored Richard’s daughter, recording artist, Margaret Whiting. Mercer helped found Capitol Records, with composer, and film producer Buddy DeSilva and businessman, Glen Wallichs. He also discovered many singers, Margaret Whiting was one of the first to have been signed. Others, include, Peggy Lee, Nat King Cole, Jo Stafford and Blossom Dearie. Brussell combines stories of Mercer, his relationship with Richard Whiting, and weaves in his intense love affair with Judy Garland, who became his muse, and inspired some of his most heartbreaking lyrics.”

Whiting wrote hits and standards before and after he met Johnny, including “She’s Funny That Way” “Ain’t We Got fun,” “Breezin’ Along With the Breeze,” “Beyond the Blue Horizon,” “Eadie Was a Lady,” “On the Good Ship Lollipop,” “Louise” with composers Buddy De Silva, Ray Egan, Gus Kahn, Leo Robin, and others.  Mercer wrote with over 75 composers, including Hoagy Carmichael, Harry Warren, Jerome Kern, Harold Arlen, and Henry Mancini, and was nominated for eighteen Academy Awards, he was the first songwriter to win four:“Moon River”, “Days of Wine and Roses”, “In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening”, and “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe.” Oscar Hammerstein said, Johnny Mercer is the most perfect American lyricist-- pure American.”

Richard Whiting said,”Sing the songs the way they are, because we wrote them with such love.”

A song becomes a musical photograph when it's lyrics and music produce an image that allows us to view the world, to see into the nature of things.  For twenty years, I have been taking musical photographs of women whose stories uncover the truth of their emotions.  It as been a "great physical and intellectual joy" for me and an experience of self-discovery.  Being a musical photographer has brought me the words of the French writer Annie Emaux, "Closer to the world."

I invite you inside this world of memorable emotions captured in musical photography. -- Kathy King Wouk
