Barbara
Brussell is a critically acclaimed singer and cabaret
artist. Her latest piece entitled
Patterns showcases her masterful ability to
integrate storytelling with sentiment, humor and exquisite
melodies. Such patterns, however, are virtually harmonic to
the person that Brussell is. As an individual whose life has
reactivated and initiated awareness in others about their
own personal life patterns, Brussell expresses their origins
through interpretations of some hidden gems from
the Broadway stage and the Great American Songbook.
Brussell
is a forty-something, fourth generation Californian who was
born in Los Angeles and raised in Carmel. Barbara was bitten
by the showbiz bug at age 3 while watching a performance of
The King and I. With her talents as a family
entertainer blossoming, she began studying piano,
composition and voice. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts
in Music, Barbara went on to study at ACT in San Francisco.
Her singing career had begun.
Barbara
performed in musicals for the next twenty years while at the
same time, establishing herself as a cabaret performer for
the past 11. Her hefty musical comedy credits include
Edith in The Pirates of Penzance,
Anne in A Little Night Music and
Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, in
national, regional and Canadian tours.
Brussell
premiered at the Plush Room, where she performed a special
Bay Area presentation of the first edition of her show
Patterns. She went on to perform in San
Francisco, Los Angeles and New York all the while wowing
critics and standing room only crowds. Brussell was
nominated by Bonnie Weiss of Theatre Week for
the Weiss Mabel (Mercer) award in the heart on
my sleeve category for the most gut wrenching
performance; not surprising since a typical pattern of life
evokes a range of emotions and Brussell excels in portraying
those emotions through her musical interpretations.
Wry,
winning, humorous, tender, deeply moving, kookie, honest and
gracious
are words that have been used to
describe Barbara Brussell performing Patterns.
With her cheering audience and her personal love and
commitment to her music, Barbara Brussell is a singer one
cannot afford to miss.
